dc.description	Over 360 General Practitioners provide primary health core services to individuals and families in those areas. Many individuals visiting GPs experience mental health difficulties ranging from mild and transitory distress to severe, enduring and disabling mental illness. In keeping with the paradigm shift towards community and primary core, underlined by most of the new policy documents, the SWAHB supports a community core model where the majority of people s health needs, including mental health, will be provided within primary core . Moreover, res ponding to mental health difficulties and disorders also requires a continuum of interventions that ore available with in both general practice and specialised mental health settings. In order to sustain this preferred model, it become evident that a comprehensive examination of the current mental health service delivery in general practice was required . Despite the key role of general practitioners in the provision of mental health services in the Irish health core system historically, little is known about the extent and types of mental health services provided in primary core. Until now most of the data has been derived from research conducted in the UK. This lock of crucial information prompted the SWAHB and the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) to conduct a research project.	en_GB
