The National Psychiatric In-patient Reporting System (NPmS) was established in 1963 to provide information on the activities of the inpatient psychiatric service. Annual reports detailing the activities of Irish psychiatric hospitals and units have been published since 1965, initially under the auspices of the Medico-Social Research Board and, since 1986, by its successor, the Health Research Board. This report provides cross-sectional data on admissions to and discharges from psychiatric inpatient facilities across the country. These data are presented in four ways; for the country as a whole, by health board area, by individual hospital and by hospital type. A range of classificatory variables is used in presenting the data i.e. gender, age, marital status, socio-economic group, legal status, diagnosis and length of stay. Selected findings and trends are commented on. A further section reviewing selected findings from one and two decades ago helps to place the findings from this year in a broader context.en_GB
