| dc.description | This is the fourth national census report of patients in psychiatric hospitals to be published by the Health Research Board (HRB) and iLS predecessor the Medico-Social Research Board. The previous publications covered the years 1963, 1971 and 1981 (Walsh 1963, O'Hare and Walsh 1971 and 1981, Appendix 1). The present publication provides information on patients resident in psychiatric hospitals and units operating within the provisions of the Mental Treatment Act 1945 on a specific night 31st March 1991. This report will comment on the 1991 relllms and make some comparisons with previous census data. These censuses provide a valuable database for the planning and development of psychiatric services at a time of extensive and rapid change in care delivery. The data allows for the comparison of services within Ireland with each other and over time. In addition the data provide a basis for international comparisons. | en_GB |
