dc.descriptionA Census of the mentally handicapped who were living at home was carried out in November 1974. The purpose or the Census was to obtain information similar to that collected in the Census of the mentally handicapped in residential care.The Census forms were completed by public health nurses and medical officers of health. Ascertainment was limited. to the moderate, severe and profound categories of handicapped persons aged four and upwards. Forms relating to 4,863 mentally handicapped persons were returned of whom 2,632 were male and 2,231 female. The returns were analysed by age, sex, degree of handicap, and Health Board Area of residence. Information was also received on diagnosis and maternal age at birth. The returns also included details of the incapacities of the handicapped and their access to education, training and employment.en_GB
