dc.description	For over 30 years, women in the Western Health Board area have had the choice of attending for cervical smears at public health clinics. One Public Health Nurse provides a dedicated service at health centres in counties Mayo, Roscommon and the rural parts of Galway on a regular basis. In Galway city, cervical smear clinics are also provided by a number of Public Health Nurses on a weekly basis. However, while Public Health Nurses hold midwifery qualifications they have received no formal training in cervical smear taking and the need for updating skills and training was highlighted by the nurses themselves. The development of a suitable training pack, which would be suitable for all health professionals involved in smear taking was considered to be an important quality initiative. It was also recognised that central to the development of such a programme would be an evaluation of the effectiveness of the programme.	en
