dc.descriptionThe Board's area, comprising the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon extends over 5,330 square miles. with a population of 348,328. Demographically, the area is characterised by a low population density. coupled with a high dependency ratio. with 14 per cent of our population aged 65 years or over, as against the national average of 11 per cent. The dependency ratio is 75 as compared with 66 for the State as a whole. 46.8 per cent of the Board's population had full eligibi lity for Health Services as at 31st December, 1989. which is the highest in the State. The birth rate per 1,000 population for the area is 13.7 and the death rate is 10.3 Community Care Services. Protection : Immunisation, child health examinations, food hygiene and standards, health education. Medical: home nursing services, maternity services, GP services, dental, ophthalmic and aural services, physiotherapy services, speech therapy services. Welfare: home help, meals-on-wheels, child care, occupational therapy services.en
