dc.description | The need, for the elderly person to continue to live in the community for as long as possible has been reiterated time and time again in surveys; reports and policy planning reviews produced during the last twenty years. It appears to us that the same theme must continue to be stressed and we do so in this report. Despite the many improvement in community care services, the policy of making it possible for elderly persons to continue to live in the community has not yet been fully realised. . In the past ten years there was, an increase of 12% in the elderly population but a very slight decline in the proportion of elderly persons in the total population. However, in the next twenty years the elderly population itself is expected to age. It is expected that there will be a 20.2% increase in the number of elderly persons aged 75 years and over by comparison with a 7.4% increase in the number aged 65 years and over and a 10.5% increase in the population as a whole in the period up to 2006. | en |
