dc.descriptionThe Medical Council's role is to protect the public interest in respect to individual doctors. A key task in fulfilling this role is to maintain accurate and dependable registers. The publication of the General and Specialist Registers occur regularly however. the likely availability of the Registers in an electronic format in the near future will increase their utility and accessibility. This study represents the first publication by the Medical Council of data gathered as part of the registration process. Data from the Annual Retention Fee process provides a unique insight into the medical profession in Ireland. This study provides a baseline on which further work will build. It is hoped to provide regular perspective on the makeup and professional ac tivities of doctors registered with the Medical Councilen_GB
